COLUMBIA — The state government soon will be looking over the shoulders of the men and women who come into the homes of South Carolina’s most vulnerable to help them perform daily tasks.

A new state law, introduced by Summerville Republican Rep. Jenny Anderson Horne and signed into law by Gov. Nikki Haley, requires licenses for in-home care providers that help elderly and disabled individuals perform daily living activities, such as cooking meals, bathing, getting out of bed and picking up around the house.

Summerville Journal Scene

The YMCA’s of South Carolina hosted its annual Key Leaders Conference on October 14 in Columbia. This half day conference brought key YMCA leaders from all over the state together to discuss how the YMCA can continue to strengthen the many families and children they serve every day.

The highlight of the event came that evening, with the presentation of the YMCA’s Legislator of the Year Award. This annual award is given out to a legislator who emphasizes the values, character and leadership qualities that the YMCA encourages. The YMCA’s mission is to inspire children and families to better themselves through Christian led programs and services. This year’s recipient was South Carolina House Representative, and Summerville resident, Jenny Horne.

Horne is a Republican who represents House District 94 consisting of Dorchester and Charleston Counties. She is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and also serves on the election laws subcommittee. Horne is an attorney in Summerville and has graciously given her time to such worthy organizations like the Communities in Schools of Dorchester County, Summerville Oakbrook Rotary Club, Bethany United Methodist Church and the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association.

To make the presentation to Horne was Gary Lukridge, CEO of the Summerville Family YMCA, who stated that “Jenny is a great example of what our legislators should stand for. She represents our district with distinction and continually shows she cares for the families and children in our area. The same character traits that the YMCA demonstrates, she also believes in. That is a testimony to the integrity and leadership of Jenny Horne.”

The YMCA’s of South Carolina distribute millions of financial assistance dollars each year to needy families who cannot afford the cost of YMCA programs and services. Their goal is to make sure every child learns the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, which can be used throughout their life. There are 22 YMCA associations in the state of South Carolina.

Giggling, laughter and hope filled the gymnasium at Pattison’s Academy Therapeutic Summer Program on Monday. That’s because children with severe disabilities are able to get one-on-one instruction and attention and they learn to actively participate in the world around them.

On Monday, local legislators, including Summerville Rep. Jenny Horne, Berkeley Rep. Joe Daning and Charleston Rep. Robert Brown visited the summer camp for “Love Your Legislator Day” in order to see how it was making a difference in the children’s lives and how much the families appreciate their support.

I had a great time helping out at the Dorchester Habitat for Humanity “Women Build” project. We helped build a new home for Omega Seabrook and her daughter!

From the Summerville Journal Scene:

More than 50 members of the local community gathered at the Corey Woods subdivision Thursday morning to break ground on the second Dorchester Habitat for Humanity Women Build project. The home will be built using a mostly all-women crew of volunteers and donated materials for Omega Seabrook and her six-year-old daughter. Pictured (from left): State Rep.
